Mekelle, January 16, 2025 (Tigray Television) The 4th anniversary of the Mahbere Dego Massacre, one of the most heinous atrocities committed during the War on Tigray, is being commemorated today. On January 16, 2021, over 73 civilians in Mahbere Dego, a village in the Naeder District of Tigray, were brutally killed by Ethiopian forces in an act that shocked the international community.

Eyewitness accounts and video evidence revealed that victims were subjected to systematic killings, with soldiers reportedly forcing people to march to the edge of a cliff before executing them. The massacre sparked global outrage and intensified calls for accountability for the widespread atrocities in the region.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have repeatedly called for independent investigations into the Mahbere Dego massacre and other similar incidents. Survivors, many of whom were displaced and stripped of their livelihoods, continue to live with the trauma of that fateful day.

The commemoration today serves as a solemn reminder of the need for justice and accountability. It also highlights the resilience of the survivors and the families of the victims, who continue to demand recognition and reparation. The international community is urged to strengthen its efforts to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and that the rights of victims are upheld.

This anniversary is believed to underscore the importance of addressing the legacy of genocide and ensuring that such tragedies never happen again.
