MEKELLE, November 20, 2017 (Tigray Mass Media Agency) – The historic city of Aksum has opened its gates to thousands of visitors from across Tigray, other regions of Ethiopia, and abroad, as they arrive to celebrate the religious festival of Hidar Tsion.

In a gesture of hospitality rooted in ancient tradition, pilgrims are being welcomed with a ceremonial foot washing upon entering the city. This custom, according to religious leaders and community elders, is a symbol of respect and purification as visitors make their way to the revered shrine.

The foot-washing tradition underscores the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage while extending heartfelt hospitality to pilgrims.
