Mekelle, November 10, 2024 (Tigrai Television) — The fourth anniversary of the Mai-kadra massacre was commemorated in Shire Endaslassie, Northwestern Tigray, honoring victims and renewing calls for justice. Under the theme “Honoring Lives, Upholding Justice,” the ceremony brought together community leaders, displaced residents, and officials from Tigray, including the Mayor of Mai-kadra and representatives from the Tigray Genocide Inquiry Commission.

The event included torch-lighting ceremony, followed by remarks from Mayor Yibralem Tsehaye, who recounted the tragic events of November 2020, when Tigrayans in Mai-kadra suffered brutal violence. “The genocide committed against the people of Mai-kadra is being systematically concealed by those perpetuating these injustices, using false narratives to distort the truth,” Mayor Yibralem stated, condemning the erasure of evidence and appealing to the international community for accountability.
Displaced survivors from Western Tigray shared their hardships and called for support to return home. Yemane Zeray, Commissioner for Tigray Genocide Inquiry Commission, and Legal Director Alem Abreha emphasized the importance of remembrance and justice in a presentation titled “Genocide of Tigray: The Massacre of Innocent Tigrayans in Mai-kadra as an Example,” underscoring remembrance as a foundation for justice.
Survivors voiced an urgent need for justice and international support, as they continue to face severe hardships, including hunger, inadequate medical care, and poverty while displaced across Tigray. “We have been forgotten,” one survivor stated. Displaced individuals in Sudan endure even harsher conditions amidst local security crises. They urgently appealed to the Tigray government, the federal government, the African Union, and international allies to uphold their responsibilities under the peace agreement and enable their safe return.
The commemoration concluded with survivor testimonies, stressing the need for truth and accountability. The ceremony
served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing suffering of IDPs in Tigray who displaced from their hometowns fleeing the horrific crimes.
