Mekelle, Tigray, November 5, 2024 — Marking the fourth anniversary of the war in Tigray, the political party Salsay Weyane Tigray has issued a statement condemning the ongoing humanitarian crisis, which it describes as “genocidal”. The party highlights the immense toll on Tigray, with over a million lives lost, severe infrastructure damage, and millions of Tigrayans displaced.

Despite a peace agreement signed two years ago, intended to end hostilities and pave the way for recovery, Salsay Weyane Tigray claims that progress has been minimal. The party argues that the core issues driving the conflict remain unresolved and that violence against the people of Tigray persists.

The statement also criticized the U.S. State Department for what it described as a mischaracterization of the peace agreement’s success, asserting that achievements have been limited to a temporary cessation of hostilities. It labeled recent U.S. statements regarding displaced Tigrayans returning home as “inaccurate,” noting that many Tigrayans continue to live in harsh conditions, awaiting a secure and dignified return.

“While the U.S. State Department has praised the implementation of the peace agreement as significant progress, the reality on the ground tells a different story. There has been no substantial progress beyond a temporary cessation of hostilities. The State Department’s claim that internally displaced persons have returned to their homes is inaccurate and deeply insensitive to the plight of millions of Tigrayans who continue to suffer in dire conditions.”

Salsay Weyane Tigray further noted that large parts of Western, Northwestern, and Eastern Tigray remain under occupation, with ongoing violence against civilians. The party expressed skepticism toward existing transitional justice mechanisms, calling them superficial measures that fall short of delivering justice or accountability for victims.

The statement called on the international community to take a more active role in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Tigray. It also urged Tigrayans to maintain their peaceful efforts to reclaim their rights and dignity.
