Tigrai Mass Media Agency: June 9, 2025: The political organization Salsay Weyane Tigray (SaWeT) has issued a strong condemnation of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) following the publication of a map that depicts Western Tigray as part of the Amhara region.
In an official statement released Monday, SaWeT described the map as “misleading and unlawful,” arguing that it undermines both constitutional order and the pursuit of peace and justice in Ethiopia. The group emphasized that Western Tigray is constitutionally recognized as part of the Tigray Regional State and that no legal or democratic process has changed this status.
According to SaWeT, the depiction of Western Tigray under Amhara administration ignores the reality of the region’s violent occupation since the onset of the war in November 2020. The group accuses UNOCHA of indirectly legitimizing what it describes as “territorial aggression, ethnic cleansing, and demographic engineering” through the use of the controversial map.
The statement further criticized UNOCHA for violating the UN’s own standards of neutrality and human rights, warning that such actions risk eroding the credibility of humanitarian operations in the region. SaWeT highlighted the suffering of millions of displaced Tigrayans, many of whom were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands.
The organization called on UNOCHA to immediately retract the map, issue a public correction, and extend a formal apology to the victims and the people of Tigray. SaWeT stressed that acknowledging the error is essential to restoring trust and upholding humanitarian integrity.
