THRAN Calls for Immediate Action to End ‘Silent Extermination’ of Displaced Communities In and Outside Tigray

Tigrai Human Rights Advocacy Network (THRAN), a coalition of rights-based civil society organizations in Tigray, has issued a press statement calling for urgent action to end what it terms the “silent extermination” of displaced communities inside and outside Tigray.

The statement follows the peaceful protests held in Mekelle at Tigray level and Switherland Geneva at an international by internally displaced persons from across Western Tigray and border districts near Eritrea under the theme: “Enough! No More Fifth Rainy Season in Tents!”

THRAN expresses grave concern over the ongoing plight of the displaced, who are entering a fifth consecutive rainy season living in makeshift shelters in camps across Tigray and in neighboring Sudan. Despite the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement in 2022 which included provisions for the withdrawal of non-ENDF (Ethiopian National Defense Forces) actors and the immediate return of IDPs, THRAN emphasizes that no meaningful repatriation has occurred. The organization criticizes the Ethiopian federal government for failing to uphold its international human rights obligations, accusing it of neglecting the comprehensive and ongoing sufferings faced by the displaced population.

THRAN calls on the people of Tigray, the wider Ethiopian population, and the international community to raise their voice and apply pressure on the African Union and its designated monitoring bodies, the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and influential global figures to create conditions conducive to the safe and dignified return of the displaced communities.

In its press, THRAN also warns against the political instrumentalization of displacement, and urges for the treatment of the suffering of these communities as a humanitarian issue rather than exploiting it for political gain.

The organization pledges international bodies tasked with overseeing the full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement to uphold their moral and legal obligations by taking concrete steps to halt the “systematic and silent extermination” of the displaced communities and to facilitate their immediate and unconditional return to their home.

As a human rights organization, THRAN affirms its continued commitment to advocate for displaced communities until all human rights violations and ongoing atrocities are fully addressed.
