MEKELLE, December 9, 2024 (Tigray Mass Media Agency) – Salsay Weyane Tigray (SaWeT), an opposition party operating in Tigray, released a press statement, detailing the ongoing hardships faced by the people of Tigray. The party condemned the act to continuously deny Tigray of essential rights and services. “Tigray continues to be deprived of its fundamental rights, including the basic rights to peace, order, public services, and development funds,” the statement reads, underscoring the dire situation the people of Tigray are enduring.
The party stated that the government’s refusal to release budgets, salaries in particular, has deepened the crisis, causing significant strain on various sectors. “The deliberate withholding of the budget, particularly the salaries of civil servants, has severely undermined the education and other sectors in Tigray.” the statement noted. SaWeT condemns this deliberate act stating that “these measures are seen as a continuation of the brutal attempts to marginalize Tigray.”
SaWeT expressed deep concern over the lack of international attention to the dire situation, citing repeated calls to the Ethiopian government that have been “met with indifference.”
The party criticized Ethiopian government’s failure to honor constitutional obligations and adhere to Pretoria Peace Agreement. “Salsay Weyane Tigray expresses its profound disappointment at the Ethiopian government’s unwillingness to fulfill its constitutional obligations and adhere to the Agreement,” the statement concluded, calling for an end to the occupation of Tigrayan territories by what they call “aggressors” and a resolution to the plight of internally displaced persons and the refugees. The party further called for urgent action to address the back pay owed to civil servants.
Salsay Weyane Tigray urged for the need of continued international involvement to address the unresolved and persistent challenges facing Tigray.
