Mekelle, July 1, 2025 (Tigrai Mass Media Agency)-Tigrayan Alliance for National Redemption, a coalition of three opposition parties operating in Tigray, has released a press statement condemning the continued occupation of Western Tigray by Amhara forces. The Alliance describes the occupation as part of a broader campaign of extermination targeting the people of Tigray.
In its statement, reaffirming that Western Tigray remains to be the ancestral homeland of the people of Tigray, the Alliance labels the Amhara forces and individuals occupying homes and properties in the area as invaders. The statement notes that atrocities including killings, torture, and forced identity changes persist against Tigrayans still living in the area, despite the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
The group accuses the federal government for deliberately turning Western Tigray into “perpetual hotspot for tension” instead of working to return the displaced individuals to their homes even after the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
The group condemns recent demonstrations in the occupied areas promoting the narrative that Western Tigray belongs to the so-called “Bege-Midr Gondar.” While acknowledging that some locals may have been coerced into this demonstration, the Alliance firmly rejects the claim and reaffirms that the land remains an integral part of Tigray.
The Alliance accuses the Amhara side of maintaining a stance of aggression and expansionism, despite repeated calls for the peaceful return of the territorial integrity of Tigray and displaced Tigrayans in accordance with the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
Appealing to Amhara intellectuals, the Alliance states that Tigrayans seek peaceful coexistence, not generational hatred, but warns that peace cannot come at the cost of their homeland or identity.
The Alliance urges all occupying and armed forces to vacate Tigrayan land and be ready for peaceful discussions.
The statement accuses the federal government of resorting to what it calls “excuses and conspiracies” instead of taking concrete steps to return displaced persons to their rightful homes.
The statement also denounces the actions of Eritrean forces, accusing them of continued invasions, abductions, and killings of Tigrayans. The Alliance demands for an end to what it calls a “shameful act” aimed at sowing lasting intergenerational hatred.
