Tsilal Civil Society of Western Tigray Urges USA, UK and UAE to Join IDPs’ Rallies as a Show of Solidarity

Tsilal Civil Society of Western Tigray (TCSWT) has recently sent a powerful and urgent plea to the embassies of the the United States (USA), the United Kingdom (UK) and United Arab Emirates (UAE), urging them to participate in the upcoming rallies that will take place under the slogan: “Enough is Enough. Hold Accountable Those Who Break Peace. No More Summers in Graves or Camps!” The demonstrations are scheduled to be held from June 18 to 20 in Mekelle, Tigray, and on June 20, 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. The rallies aim to amplify the voices of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who have been living in camps for years, waiting for a return to their homes.

The letters demand the embassies of the three countries to release official statements to publicly recognize the Ethiopian federal government’s failure to uphold the key provisions of the Pretoria Peace Agreement and the Nairobi Declaration. These include the failure to uphold Article 5(3) of the Pretoria Agreement, referring to the federal government’s failure to return and reintegrate IDPs safely despite the commitments made. The letters also cite the failure to adhere to Article 4(1&2), which condemns the failure of the federal government and its associated forces to protect civilians and prevent acts of violence as stipulated in the agreement. Another major violation mentioned is the failure to implement Article 9(2), referring to the deliberate exclusion of Tigray from political representation in the House of Federation and the House of People’s Representatives. Lastly, the letters reference the violation of the Nairobi Declaration 2(D), which involves the federal government’s failure to withdraw foreign and non-ENDF forces from Tigray, thereby undermining peace implementation.

The civil society also requests the embassies’ confirmation of commitment or receipt of accountability statements by June 18, 2025. In particular, the letter addressed to the UAE forwards serious criticism, accusing the Gulf nation of being silent despite its strategic role in the region. Tsilal Civil Society argues that the UAE’s silence, while displaced Tigrayans continue to suffer, constitutes complicity and undermines the credibility of its regional engagement.

Tsilal Civil Society of Western Tigray, by issuing these letters and organizing public rallies,  seeks not just statements, but clear and timely action from global powers. The campaign is a cry for international solidarity, a demand for accountability, and a call to restore the livelihood of those who have endured the devastating impacts war and displacement.
