MEKELLE, December 9, 2024 (Tigray Mass Media Agency) – Commission of Inquiry on Tigrai Genocide (CITG) issues a press release on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and the Prevention of This Crime reflecting on the atrocities that are being and were committed against the People of Tigray. The commission reports on the dire conditions the war on Tigray have inflicted towards the people of Tigray. “The ongoing crisis in Tigray serve as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of genocide and the global responsibility to act.” the statement highlights.

CITG notes on the presence of external forces in Tigray causing human right violations in the occupied areas even after the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement. “Hundreds of thousands of Tigrayans remain under the control of Amhara militias, Fano Paramilitary groups and Eritrean forces particularly in the Western zone, as well as in the North-western, Central and Eastern regions of Tigray.” the commission states.

CITG voices its concern regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis of the Internally Displaced Persons and the refugees in Sudan who fled the war on Tigray. “Millions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are living in dire conditions facing hunger, disease and unimaginable hardships. Thousands of Tigrayan refugees in Sudan also remain stranded in unsafe and unstable environments.” the statement assures.

In the statement, the commission expresses its dissatisfaction on the international community for their failure to meet up to the standards of their humanity obligations. “we affirm the international community failed in its duty to protect us.” the commission criticizes.

CTIG urges the international community to provide due attention to the persistent crimes committed against the people of Tigray and take immediate action to bring lasting solutions. The commission calls the global community for the full recognition of the genocide committed in Tigray as experts from the New Lines Institute attribute the human rights violations committed against Tigrayans amount to the international legal definition; withdrawal of non-ENDF forces, acceleration of return of IDPs and refugees and provision of support to rebuild the lives of survivors.
