December 27, 2025 (Tigray Mass Media Agency) Tigray Statistics and Vital Events Registration Agency (TSVERA) has expressed concerns regarding the implementation of the national digital identification system, “Fayda,” citing violations of the Tigray’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In an official letter to the National Identification Program in Addis Ababa, TSVERA states that registration activities carried out since last year in Humera, Raya, Tsegedé, and Wolkait do not respect the legally recognized boundaries of Tigray. The agency warns that the current approach could potentially lead to demographic changes, despite these areas being constitutionally recognized as part of the Tigray.
The letter notes that the adminstration in Tigray has provided significant financial and political support to facilitate the national ID program. However, TSVERA stresses that the ongoing registration process undermines the collaborative spirit that had previously guided joint implementation efforts.
TSVERA has called for an immediate revision of the registration process to ensure that it fully respects Tigray’s sovereignty and adheres to its constitutionally established territorial boundaries.
