December 23, 2025 ( Tigray Mass Media Agency) Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) issues an urgent appeal to key international humanitarian agencies, development partners, and concerned stakeholders, warning of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis facing internally displaced persons (IDPs) in several IDP camps in Tigray, particularly at Hitsats, Northwestern Tigray.
In a statement addressed to officials from the UNOCHA, WHO, WFP, ICRC, EU Commission, AUC, and key donor governments, GSTS notes that vulnerable groups including unaccompanied children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those with chronic illnesses are already dying from starvation, severe malnutrition, and preventable diseases.
According to GSTS, field reports and emerging images indicate that people are succumbing daily to conditions that could be mitigated through immediate humanitarian intervention. The organization warns that delays in assistance are costing lives that could still be saved.
GSTS calls on the international community to urgently scale up life-saving food aid, medical services, and emergency relief; ensure unimpeded humanitarian access to all IDP camps; and strengthen international coordination to halt further loss of life. It also urges global and regional actors to use all political and diplomatic means to ensure the swift implementation of PretoriaPeace Agreement, enabling the safe and dignified return of displaced Tigrayans and refugees from Sudan.
“The gravity of this crisis cannot be overstated,” GSTS states, stressing that immediate action is essential to avert a humanitarian catastrophe. The organization reaffirms its readiness to work with all stakeholders to protect the lives and dignity of Tigrayan IDPs and refugees.
