Mekelle, August 22, 2025 (Tigray Mass Media Agency)- Grand celebration of Ashenda is being celebrated colorfully drawing thousands of young women and girls dressed in colorful traditional attire to Baloni stadium in Tigray’s capital Mekelle. The celebration, which began this morning across Tigray has brought together residents, visitors, and officials from the Interim Administration of Tigray, and the federal government to the Stadium in Mekelle.
Young celebrant girls express joy at being able to freely showcase their traditions, saying the festival is a source of pride that keeps them connected to their roots and brings happiness to their communities. Tourists and visitors from across Ethiopia and abroad also took part in the festivities, underscoring the festival’s growing recognition as a unique cultural attraction.
The three-day Ashenda festival, celebrated annually starting on August 22, continues to serve as a symbol that empowers women, promotes cultural identity, strengthens social bonds, and inspires calls for lasting peace in Tigray and beyond.
