Safe Return of Displaced People Is Not Political Matter But Humanitarian Concern: Says Tigray’s IRA President

Mekelle July 16, 2025 (Tigrai Mass Media Agency) President of Interim Administration in Tigray, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede, has met with the Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Ethiopia, Andrew Mbogori, to discuss the urgent needs of displaced people in Tigray. The President reaffirmed that the safe return of displaced communities in Tigray is not a political matter but a fundamental humanitarian concern.

Lt. Gen. Tadesse expressed deep concern over the suffering of internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of whom are facing their fifth consecutive rainy season in dire conditions. He underlined the urgency of facilitating their return and emphasized that ensuring their safety must be a top priority throughout the repatriation process.

The President noted that the Interim Administration is working in close coordination with the federal government to ensure a secure and dignified return for all displaced persons.

Andrew Mbogori, representing UNHCR, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and reiterated the agency’s commitment to continuing support. He said UNHCR has been assisting Ethiopian refugees who fled to Sudan during the conflict and pledged to expand their humanitarian response to those returning.

This meeting highlights the growing collaboration between regional authorities and international partners to address the pressing needs of displaced populations in Tigray.
