December 23, 2025 (Tigray Mass Media Agency) 282 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have died of starvation over the past two years at Adi Mohammeday IDP Camp in Northwestern Tigray, amid a prolonged shortage of humanitarian assistance.

A group of journalists from Tigray Television who recently visited the camp observed widespread hunger, deteriorating health conditions, and extreme shortages of basic services. The IDPs reported that no humanitarian assistance has reached the camp for the past seven months.

Coordinator of  Adi Mohammeday IDP Camp, Berhane Amare reveals that displaced families at the camp have not received any form of humanitarian aid for the past seven months, leaving thousands without food, medical care, or adequate shelter. He adds that a total of 283 people have died at the site since 2023, while 6,630 others are currently in urgent need of emergency assistance.

The crisis is compounded by the absence of a permanent health facility at the camp. Health services are limited to a mobile clinic that operates once a week, leaving thousands—particularly malnourished children, pregnant women, elderly people, and people with chronic illnesses—without access to timely medical care. The combination of hunger, inadequate shelter, and limited health services has contributed to rising preventable deaths.

Adi Mohammeday IDP Center hosts more than 27,300 displaced people, the majority of whom are children, mothers, female-headed households, and elderly parents living in extremely fragile conditions.

During the visit, journalists documented the case of an infant called Kahsay Abrhaley. He is among those whose mother died during childbirth due to hunger and the lack of medical care—an example the IDPs say reflects the broader suffering of displaced children in the camp.

The IDPs continue to appeal for urgent life-saving assistance and call on authorities to create conditions that would allow them to return safely to their homes before the humanitarian situation deteriorates further.
