Mekelle, September 23, 2025 (Tigray Mass Media Agency) A two year old boy, Naod Haileselassie dies after being attacked by a hyena inside Mekelle Seba Kare Internally Displaced Persons Camp this morning. According to the IDPs in the camp, the Hyena entered the camp around 6:30 AM and takes Naod’s life. They add that hyenas have repeatedly broken into houses in the area, often taking chickens, but this time the attack claimed a child’s life.
Naod’s parents, Haileselassie Fitewi and Rigat Gebrehiwot, are among the Hundreds of thousands displaced by the war on Tigray. They were forced to flee their home in Rawyan vicinity of Kafta Humera District in Western Tigray. They have been living in the shelter for more than five years. They are now mourning their son in a small tent pitched within the camp in Mekelle.
The IDPs in the camp voice their frustration and grief over the sudden loss of young Naod. The IDPs say the reason for the problem is that the place is not protected and is not safe. They express serious concerns for their safety, noting the presence of more hyenas around the camp could lead to the same fate for other children if the problem is not resolved immediately. They urge the concerned bodies to find lasting solutions to end the five year long suffering of the displaced people.
