Tigray Interim Administration issued a statement earlier today on the upholding famine in Tigray, calling upon the Federal government and the international community to swiftly intervene to address the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn region.
“The IRA, therefore, calls upon the Federal government and the international community to fulfil their legal and moral responsibilities by intervening promptly to address the looming danger of starvation and death.” The statement from the President office stated.
The Office highlighted that the shortage of seasonal rainfall exacerbated by the locust infestation created a nightmare in the region that has witnessed the decimation of economic base, the destruction of health facilities and the forcible displacement of over a million of its 6 million population in a devastating war.
The statement warned that the consequences will be deadly in the absence of concerted effort to address the famine.
“We further call upon the Federal government and the international community to move with speed and sense of urgency to arrest this unfolding humanitarian emergency, which is killing Tigrayans without indiscrimination.” The statement added.
The statement said the administration cannot address the crisis with its limited resource.
“The unfolding danger is beyond the IRA’s capacity to handle.” It stressed.
