Mekelle, March 18, 2023 (Tigrai Television) – On Friday, the Tigrai People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) Central Committee picked Getachew Reda to lead Tigrai Interim Regional Administration.

According to Article 10 of the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) signed between the Ethiopian federal government and TPLF in Pretoria on the 2nd of November, ‘an inclusive Interim Regional Administration’ would replace the current regional government.

“… until elections for the Regional Council and the House of Peoples ‘Representatives are held under the supervision of the Ethiopian National Electoral Board, the establishment of an inclusive Interim Regional Administration will be settled through political dialogue between the parties” the agreement states.

48 years old Getachew, has developed into an executive committee member of the TPLF following the election of Dr. Tedros Adhanom as WHO’s chief in May of 2017.

Getachew Reda served Ethiopia’s federal government in different positions including his role as a Minister of the Government Communications Affairs Ministry until 2016 under Hailemariam Desalegn’s premiership.

In 1998, Getachew completed his undergraduate studies at Addis Ababa University’s School of Law. Before his return to Tigrai to profess law at Mekelle University, Getachew earned his Master of Law (LL.M) at Alabama University, Tuscaloosa, United States in 2002.

Getachew’s nomination is expected to be approved in a discussion with the federal government to replace Tigrai leader Debretsion Gebremichael, who has led the region in northern Ethiopia since 2018.
