Salsay Weyane Tigrai opposes Amhara Regional State plan to conduct referendum in forcefully occupied areas of Tigrai.
In its weekly statement earlier today, SAWET said the plan violates constitutional procedures and is a contempt to peoples right of self-determination enfranchised in the FDRE constitution.
Western zone of Tigrai fall under the control of Amhara forces few weeks after the war on Tigrai erupted in November of 2020.
Salsay Weyane Tigrai stated its firm belief that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stands in full support of the planned referendum recalling his remark at the House of Peoples’ Representatives last week.
Salsay Weyane Tigrai added that Tigrains who fled to neighboring Sudan escaping the genocide are now left under sever condition due to the eruption of a conflict in Sudan .The party says the refugees are now lacking “potable water ,food and medical services.”
SAWET underscored that the refugees’ situation has now aggravated as aid agencies are leaving Sudan .
“This has forced the Tigrains for another round of displacement leaving them on brink of death” read the statement.
SAWET reiterates for accountability on those involved in the food diversion that was put as a pretext for the aid suspension that continues to claim the lives of countless Tigrains on a daily basis.
