In new report published on Monday, Amnesty International said Eritrean forces continue to commit war crimes including rape, mass execution and pillage in Tigrai despite the signing of a peace deal.

The report highlighted that Eritrean forces committed intentional killing of civilians and sexual violence in Kokob Tsibah, Eastern Tigrai and Mariam Shewito, Central Tigrai.

Amnesty International interviewed 11 survivors of rape and sexual slavery in Kokob Tsibah district, where more than 40 women told a local civil society organization that they had been subjected to rape and sexual slavery in the period after the signing of the CoHA. According to the recent report, some women were raped inside an EDF military camp, others in their own homes or inside homes taken over by the EDF.

Amnesty International also  b    interviewed four survivors of sexual violence who were held in an EDF camp in Kokob Tsibah district for nearly three months and subjected to rape and sexual slavery.

The report said crimes in Mariam Shewito, central Tigrai, took place in October and November 2022 while the negotiation between Ethiopian government and the TPLF was underway. However human right violations in Kokob Tsibah continued until January of 2023 three months after the signing of the Pretoria peace agreement. Amnesty International recommends the extension of the mandate of the UN’s International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia to preserve evidence of crimes under international law and support future accountability efforts.
